about

I always loved the idea of having everything I would ever need in a backpack. This song comes from vivid memories around the enthusiastic preparations for a daytrip into the hills in Havelock North, New Zealand as a child. A friend and I made a pack lunch and headed for the farm behind our property. Having a pocket knife was the coolest and most useful thing and i prided myself on having a sharp knife out in the wilderness. Near the farmhouse we met a young girl who offered us lollies. Being the oldest I felt responsible for our safety and refused the lollies because she was a stranger. My friend just ate them and told me I was being stupid. Eventually we made it as far as we could and turned back for home.

The second half of the song involves a realisation that life beyond the boundary fences of our sheltered childhood's is serious and challenging. Having a pocket knife doesn't solve every problem anymore. It is about having the will to take the step over the stile and out and beyond our comfortable little lives.

I write music and poetry with a focus around ideas of home and homelessness, adventure and solitude, memory, intuition, and experience. The Shrill Call is a project through which these ideas become shared.
